We've run the Hoosier Beginning Farmer Fellowship for two years...and thanks to generous support from the city of Bloomington and the National Young Farmers Coalition, we are able to tailor our Fellowship program to focus on BIPOC farmers in the Monroe County area. We are also able to offer our Fellows $5,000 as compensation for their participation in the Fellowship. The goal of the funding is to acknowledge the work farmers put into being fellows, and to allow beginning farmers to build their farm’s capacity, scale up their farm to the next level, and/or intensify their farm’s impact on local and regional food systems throughout Indiana. Ideally, the funds will offset costs incurred by participating in the Fellowship, and let the farmer tackle a major farm project that will advance their growing businesses. The Monroe County Fellowship Coordinator will oversee the administration and execution of the Fellowship program. They will be given a broad array of day-to-day tasks to ensure the Fellowship program runs efficiently, and will be asked to participate in bigger-picture discussions to help improve future Fellowship offerings. The selected candidate would join a team of experienced regional managers who help cultivate relationships in their local communities and statewide with elected officials, farmers and ag industry partners and they help educate consumers about general agriculture practices. Duties would include organizing and attending agriculture-related events at the local and state levels, and travel to the Indiana Statehouse and to national agricultural activities to help our members share their stories and concerns with elected officials as they push for legislation that supports and protects agriculture and rural communities in Indiana. The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree (Ag-specific degree preferred but not required), a minimum of three years of work experience, strong communication and organizational skills and be a self-starter.
