looking for land? seeking veggie/herb/etc farmer at nightfall

6/11/2018

Picture
We've just taken over management of another 37 acres of our family farm. We don't need this much land for our regenerative pasture-based livestock operation, so we'd like to find a farmer who needs land.

We see the market for - and have the land base for - a vegetable operation. Our farm is just the two of us, and we want to continue devoting our time to raising our animals. We're looking for a veggie grower interested in starting their own farm on our land, starting in  2019.

Markets/Location: We're located in southern IN (3 miles off of I-65, near Seymour). We currently sell to three mid-size town farmer's markets within a 40-minute drive. While these markets have plenty of tomatoes, corn, and zucchini, they lack diversity and year-round production. Indy is a 1.25 hour drive and Louisville is 1 hour drive.

Amenities: There is no infrastructure on the land yet, but we're adding power and water this Spring. For the right farmer(s), we would be interested in pursuing a long-term lease. Also, our neighbor has an 1800's farmhouse and barn (both in reasonably good condition) on adjacent land, and it’s up for rent! The barn looks ideal for creating a wash/pack and storage set up.

Soils and Acreage: Soils are silt loam, though they sit wet. We are cover cropping the field for all of 2018 and converting much of the land to pasture and fruit and nut plantings in 2019. We envision leaving about 5 acres set aside for vegetable production (but this number is flexible). We imagine that we could, in the future, rotate the veggie production area with our pasture.

Please be in touch if you or a farmer you know are interested. We look forward to talking with you!
