​Job title: Farm Crew Member
Schedule: 15-20 hours per week, April-October, with some variability due to weather
Pay rate: $12-$14 per hour, depending on experience
 
New Ground Farm (newgroundfarm.com) is a small-scale certified organic vegetable farm in Bloomington, Indiana, a community with a vibrant local food scene. Primary sales outlets include the Bloomington Farmers’ Market, a cooperative farm stand located on the property, and co-op grocery stores. The farm is operated part-time.

Primary sales outlets include the Bloomington Farmers’ Market, a cooperative farm stand located on the property, and co-op grocery stores. The farm is operated part-time.
 
The successful candidate will work under the farm owner’s direction, across a range of tasks that will include weeding, spreading compost, transplanting, harvesting, washing, and packing for market. During the summer months, the main focus will be on harvesting/washing/packing activities. Depending on interest level, there will also be opportunities to help staff the farm’s booth at the Saturday Farmer’s Market.
 
Required skills and abilities:
  • Experience doing physical work outdoors
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently while maintaining attention to detail and quality standards
  • Ability to integrate well with a small team
  • Self-starter, able to work alone at times
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability and willingness to perform repetitive tasks while standing/bending/kneeling in all weather conditions
  • Comfortable working with hand tools and harvest knives
 
Not required but a plus: 
  • Maintenance experience with irrigation systems
  • Experience or interest in scouting for and diagnosing pest and disease issues
 
The weekly work schedule varies depending on the time of year, but is typically Monday-Friday, 7:30-12:30ish. On-farm housing is not available, but Bloomington has a robust rental market. The farm address is 4741 E. Bethel Lane, Bloomington 47408.
